Apple Special scores

Apple Special won the $50,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship at Laurel Park. The one-mile race on the "good" main track was restricted to Maryland-breds.

Under jockey Oliver Castillo, Apple Special tracked dueling pacesetters to the far turn, circled widest around the turn, challenged Malibu Kid heading down the lane, and galloped away to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Malibu Kid took second and Regal Solo rallied to finish third. Smooth It Over, the 3-1 favorite, finished fifth.

Apple Special, trained by Jerry Robb, completed the distance in 1:39.20 and paid $15.20.
