A.P. Andie can anchor pick six

Dave Litfin|Jan 28, 2002

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Partly because of Totaly Wild's upset in the Busanda Stakes on Sunday, a pick-six carryover of $32,316 awaits Aqueduct horseplayers Wednesday, following the two-day break.

Wednesday's pick six concludes with the eighth race, a $56,000 classified allowance at 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares who are nonwinners of $18,000 twice at a mile in the past five months, or nonwinners of four races other than maiden, claiming, starter, or restricted.

Three of the six entrants - Rochelle's Terms, A.P. Andie, and Double Trick - last raced in the Affectionately Handicap on Jan. 12 - finishing fourth, fifth, and seventh, respectively.

Also in the field are: Lovely Amanda, who is unraced since breezing to victory in the Montauk Handicap against New York-breds on Dec. 2; Poivre, who has a spiffy 4-for-6 record on the inner-dirt track; and Big Miss, a freshened shipper from Suffolk Downs who closed out 2001 with three straight wins at her home track.

Lovely Amanda was primarily a sprinter-miler type for trainer Todd Pletcher most of last year. She has never raced at 1 1/16 miles, but she did make a successful transition to routes in the 1 1/8-mile Montauk, which she won in a cakewalk after stalking the early leaders through slow fractions. She has been idle for nearly two months, but has repeatedly shown the ability to fire her best shot off the bench.

Javier Castellano, who notched his 37th inner-track victory on Sunday to tie apprentice Lorenzo Lezcano for the winter-meet lead, has a return call from post 4.

Of the trio coming out of the Affectionately, A.P. Andie was the only one who made her presence felt, but the demands of a pace duel with even-money favorite Tugger left her running on fumes by the upper stretch.

Before that, A.P. Andie, who was a sprinter nearly all of last year, stretched to two turns on the inner track on Dec. 12. She contested a more moderate pace that day, and pulled away through the stretch to win a third-level allowance at 14-1. A return to that form would make her very dangerous.

A.P. Andie breaks from the outside post, and with a switch to Lezcano she gets in with 111 pounds, getting weight from all.

Rochelle's Terms has never been an easy mare to figure, but she is a threat if and when she's in the mood. Her last three wins have come at odds of 11-1, 12-1, and 26-1.
