Anywho and Richi could be well-known fillies by the end of the summer. Anywho won a six-furlong allowance race by eight lengths in her 2024 debut on May 17 at Churchill Downs for trainer John Sadler. Richi was a multiple Group 1 winner in Chile who joined trainer Bob Baffert’s stable last winter. The two fillies are part of a field of seven in Sunday’s $100,000 Desert Stormer Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs at Santa Anita. The field also includes three American stakes winners in Chismosa, Outside the Law, and Tom’s Regret. Sunday's card at Santa Anita will include a $63,126 carryover in the pick six after the bet went unhit Saturday. The track estimates that the total pool will approach $500,000 on Sunday. The Desert Stormer is positioned on the Southern California calendar as a prep for the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes, a $200,000 race at 6 1/2 furlongs on July 6 at Los Alamitos. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Sadler has mentioned the Great Lady M. as a goal for Anywho, who will have the fastest turnaround of her brief career if she runs Sunday. Sadler cautioned Friday that he planned to review the Desert Stormer field before committing Anywho to a start. “She bounced out of her last race really well,” he said. “It’s a little quick on the timing. We’ll take a look.” Anywho, a winner of 3 of 6 starts for Hronis Racing, was sidelined after she finished seventh of eight in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile at Del Mar last September. In four career sprints, Anywho has won three times and finished second by a neck, racing near the front or from a stalking position. “She’s always had the ability,” Sadler said. Richi has won 6 of 9 starts at distances ranging from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles. The Desert Stormer is Richi’s first start since she finished eighth of 16 against males in the Group 1 Chilean St. Leger at 1 3/8 miles last December. In advance of her American debut, Richi has worked quickly in recent weeks, including five furlongs from the gate in 59 seconds on May 20, the fastest of the morning. Baffert acknowledged Friday that the Desert Stormer Stakes is a “starting point” for Richi’s American career. “I think she’s been here long enough,” he said. “She’s been working well. We’ll see how she handles it. “I think she’s more effective going two turns. Later in the summer, she’ll be at her prime. We can figure her out.” Anywho and Richi have a talented rival in Chismosa, a three-time stakes winner. Chismosa won the Grade 3 Las Flores Stakes at six furlongs on Jan. 1 and was later second in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes at seven furlongs on Feb. 3. Those are her most recent starts on dirt. The Desert Stormer will be the stakes debut for Delitefull Hart, a 4-year-old filly who won an allowance race in her 2024 debut on April 4 for her second win in three starts. She poses a threat from off the pace. “She sat nicely the other day,” trainer Mike Puype said. “It’s not who she beat, it’s how she did it. She’s basically on the rise with how she looks physically.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
