Any Given Royal class of Wednesday's featured race
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Any Given Royal returns to turf and drops in for a tag in a one-mile, $40,000 optional-claiming event here Wednesday that also is open to Ontario-sired non-winners of three.
A 5-year-old gelding, Any Given Royal had been competitive in second-level allowance races on turf at Churchill Downs late last season and finished fifth, beaten a length, in the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes over a mile on this surface last June. Trainer Brian Lynch has a 30 percent strike rate from his last 33 starters going from synthetic to turf.
Speyside, part of a Bear Stables entry with Silent Yet Deadly, is one of three horses in the field who have won on turf. The others are Future Strike, who defeated Speyside in a first-level Ontario-sired allowance last season on turf, and Raging Mane.
El Mono Verde figures to be on the lead and comes into this race off a win in a $12,500 claimer for non-winners of two.
A cutback in distance might suit Dupes, who was second at this classification on Polytrack at seven furlongs two starts back before losing ground late in his last start, which came over 1 1/16 miles on May 19.
Skimmer Jim, Osculator, and Rhythm of Rock each makes his first start on turf.
