Antiquarian retired after sustaining injury

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Antiquarian, the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner of 2025 and a three-time graded stakes winner, has been retired from racing, according to a release from his owners, Centennial Farms.

The release said that Antiquarian was discovered to have a minor suspensory injury underneath his left ankle. While the prognosis is excellent, he will not be able to defend his title in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sept. 18 at Belmont Park or make the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

“Antiquarian owes us nothing and has been a wonderful horse for our Centennial partners and the [Todd] Pletcher barn,” the Centennial release read.

Antiquarian will return to Centennial’s farm in Middleburg, Va., and a stallion deal will be announced in the near future, according to the release.

Antiquarian was from the first crop of Centennial’s fellow Grade 1 winner and millionaire Preservationist. Antiquarian won graded stakes at ages 3, 4, and 5, taking the Grade 3 Peter Pan at Aqueduct in 2024, the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga in 2025, and the Grade 3 Westchester at Aqueduct in 2026. In his most recent start, Antiquarian finished third behind 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga on Aug. 8.

Antiquarian was the first foal out of the dam Lifetime Memory. The next two foals also won, including Fondly, winner of the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks and Virginia Oaks.

Antiquarian retires with a record of 5-3-1 from 14 starts and earnings of $1,320,350.
