The names of Antiquarian’s sire and dam, Preservationist and Lifetime Memory, are apt. The colt indeed provided a lifetime memory for all of his Centennial Farm partners when he won the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Aug. 31 at Saratoga, and he is helping to preserve the memory of his recently deceased sire, who scored his biggest win six years to the day prior, and on the same track, for Centennial. Preservationist, a millionaire son of Arch, rewarded the patience of Centennial and trainer Jimmy Jerkens. He had myriad starts and stops during his career, limiting him to 11 lifetime races. After one race at age 3 and one at age 4, he won a maiden race at age 5. Although he would later become known for running longer distances, he was fleet-footed enough to win that six-furlong sprint in 1:09.35. The maiden race was one of two starts for Preservationist at age 5. As a 6-year-old, he had his most complete campaign with seven starts, including a pair of graded stakes victories. The first of those came in the Grade 2 Suburban going 1 1/4 miles at Belmont Park, where he rolled by 4 1/2 lengths. Later that summer, on Aug. 31, 2019, he won the Grade 1 Woodward at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Preservationist retired to Airdrie Stud for the 2020 season and ultimately stood five seasons in the U.S. After covering 102 mares in his first season, according to statistics from The Jockey Club, he bred 43 in 2021, 36 in 2022, 16 in 2023, and 11 in 2024. The stallion was relocated to South Korea last December and stood one season there before complications from colic claimed him this July 19 at age 12. From relatively limited opportunities, Preservationist has been solid, with 55 winners from 86 starters to date. His first crop is led by Antiquarian, who, in addition to his Grade 1 win, took the Grade 3 Peter Pan last year. His second crop of current 3-year-olds includes Grade 3 winner Chunk of Gold. Preservationist is also the sire of stakes winners Band of Gold, Diakonissa, and In a Jam, as well as Shining Lady, a Grade 3 winner in Puerto Rico, and eight other stakes-placed runners. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
