Last year, each passing race in the Triple Crown highlighted the magnitude of the loss of the stallion Scat Daddy, as his son Justify swept through Louisville, Baltimore, and New York undefeated. There was still one more crop of runners waiting in the wings for Scat Daddy, who had died at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky in December 2015 at age 11. And one of those runners is bound for Baltimore this week. Anothertwistafate, by Scat Daddy, won the El Camino Real Derby in February on Golden Gate’s synthetic track to earn an automatic berth into the Preakness Stakes. He then finished second in both the Grade 3 Sunland Derby and Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on dirt in an effort to earn enough points to make the Kentucky Derby field. He sat 23rd on the points list when entries were taken, and trainer Blaine Wright had already taken the colt back to his California base to focus on preparing for the Preakness. Wright describes Anothertwistafate as being enthusiastic in his training. “He’s the type of horse that when you work him a half, he works six furlongs,” Wright said. “He always gets a lot out of his breezes and gallops. He’s a big, long-striding horse.” Anothertwistafate was bred in Kentucky by Pursuit of Success LLC. He was consigned by Wavertree Stables to last year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s June sale of 2-year-olds in training, where Alistair Roden Bloodstock, as agent, purchased him for $360,000. He races in the colors of Peter Redekop B. C. Ltd. Anothertwistafate is among a solid handful of graded/group stakes performers from the final crop of Scat Daddy, many of those coming in Europe for the popular international sire. Skitter Scatter was last season’s highweighted 2-year-old filly on the Irish Free Handicap after winning three group stakes, highlighted by the Group 1 Moyglare Stud. Another juvenile filly running in Ireland last year, So Perfect, was a Group 3 winner in that country, Group 1 placed in both Ireland and England, and traveled to Kentucky to finish third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint behind the then-unbeaten Bulletin. Sergei Prokofiev was a Group 3 winner in England last year and placed in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at the renowned Royal Ascot meeting. Gossamer Wings also was Group 2-placed at Royal Ascot, finishing second in the Queen Mary. Meanwhile, Van Beethoven was a Group 2 winner in Ireland. Group 3 winner Qabala finished third in this spring’s English 1000 Guineas. Divine Image won this year’s Group 3 UAE Oaks and finished second in the UAE 1000 Guineas. Jo Jo Air was the upset winner of the William Walker Stakes on opening night at Churchill Downs, with another Scat Daddy offspring, Group 2-placed Legends of War, finishing third – both ahead of Bulletin. Scat Daddy’s final crop also includes, to date, stakes winners Iva and Lagertha, group-placed Sanenus, and stakes-placed Federal Law, Memo Daddy, Mistress of Love, and Scat Mommy.
