Annals of Time outshines two other stablemates in Hollywood Derby

Benoit & Associates Annals of Time, ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, defeats stablemate Beach Patrol by 1 1/2 lengths in the Hollywood Derby.

DEL MAR, Calif. - The least experienced runner in Saturday’s $302,415 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar turned out to be best.

Annals of Time, making his fourth career start, overcame a wide post to rally between horses in the final furlong and win his first stakes in the Grade 1 race for 3-year-olds on turf.

Ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, Annals of Time ($13.80) finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of 7-2 Beach Patrol, giving New York-based trainer Chad Brown a sweep of the exacta.

Annals of Time’s late kick left Castellano impressed. After breaking from post 11 in the field of 12, Annals of Time was 10th on the turn and was fifth with a furlong to go. Annals of Time closed through a narrow gap between the Southern California graded stakes winners Frank Conversation and Free Rose to reach the front in the final sixteenth.

“It was remarkable the way he did it” Castellano said. “I liked the way he split horses.

“I had a bad post and tried to save all the ground possible. I tried to save some ground on the last turn.”

Annals of Time was clocked in 1:47.73. Frank Conversation, a 19-1 outsider, finished third, followed by Hayabusa One, Free Rose, Blackjackcat, Camelot Kitten, Revved Up, Isotherm, Diplodocus, Path of David, and Defiantly.

Camelot Kitten, the winner of four graded stakes for 3-year-olds on turf this year, was the 7-2 favorite for Brown.

Annals of Time, a colt by Temple City, races for William Lawrence and Klaravich Stable. Annals of Time beat maidens at Aqueduct in November 2015, and did not start again until September, when he finished second in an optional claimer at Saratoga.

Annals of Time was third behind Camelot Kitten and Beach Patrol in the Grade 3 Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 8. Annals of Time has won 2 of 4 starts and earned $289,000. He was purchased for $80,000 as a yearling at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale in Kentucky.

The win in the Hollywood Derby left Castellano eager to see what Annals of Time can do as a 4-year-old in 2017.

“He’s a good horse,” he said. “I think he wants to go farther.”
