ELMONT, N.Y. – Annals of Time, winner of the Grade 1 Sword Dancer last month at Saratoga, has sustained an injury that will prevent him from running again this year, trainer Chad Brown said Sunday. Brown said a decision on whether Annals of Time would race in 2020 as a 7-year-old would be made a later date. “The horse needs a couple of months off, he’s going to miss everything the rest of the year, so we might as well give him an extended break and go from there,” Brown said. Brown said the injury “doesn’t have to be” a career-ending injury. But, the fact Annals of Time will be 7 next year could play a role in determining if he does race again. “He hasn’t run that much in his life, but surely we’re not going to put him at any risk,” said Brown, who trains Annals of Time for Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence. Annals of Time, a son of Temple City, has only raced eight times, winning five including the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby in 2016. He made only one start in 2017, winning an allowance at Belmont in September. He was then off again for 21 months, returning in June where he finished third in an allowance at Belmont. Following an allowance win at Saratoga on July 24, Annals of Time won the Grade 1 Sword Dancer by a neck over Sadler’s Joy on Aug. 24. Meanwhile, Brown still has not committed to a plan for Bricks and Mortar, the four-time Grade 1 winner this year. On Sunday, he worked five furlongs in 1:00.34 over Belmont Park’s outer turf course in company with reigning female turf champion Sistercharlie, who is preparing for the Grade 1 Flower Bowl here on Oct. 6. Brown’s options for Bricks and Mortar include training up to either the Breeders’ Cup Mile or Turf or getting a race in before the Breeders’ Cup. “He had a beautiful breeze,” Brown said. “He’s doing really well, he’s holding his fitness well, and I like where he’s at.” Brown said Ya Primo, who finished last as the second choice in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer, would make his next start in the Grade 1, $500,000 Joe Hirsch Stakes on Oct. 5. Dunbar Road likely to Spinster On Monday, Brown planned to enter the two-time Grade 1 Guarana in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion at Parx. Meanwhile, Dunbar Road, the Grade 1 Alabama winner, will most likely make her next start against older fillies and mares in the Grade 1, $500,000 Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 6. “I want to give her some extra time between races and I want to keep her two turns,” Brown said. “That race fits the bill for that.” On Saturday, Dunbar Road worked five furlongs in 1:00.55 over Belmont’s main track while Guarana worked five furlongs in 1:00.10.
