Annals of Time wins the Hollywood Derby
Benoit & Associates Annals of Time won the Hollywood Derby in his first start in a Grade 1 race.

Annals of Time and Beach Patrol gave New York-based trainer Chad Brown an exacta sweep in Saturday’s $302,415 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar. The result helped Brown clarify his 2017 goals for his soon-to-be 4-year-old turf runners.

Annals of Time made his fourth start, and his first in a Grade 1, in the Hollywood Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Ridden by Javier Castellano, Annals of Time closed from fifth between horses in the final furlong to pass Beach Patrol and win by 1 1/2 lengths as a 5-1 shot.

Brown had three runners in the race, including Camelot Kitten, who finished seventh as the 7-2 favorite. Brown said Sunday they are unlikely to start in the same races in 2017.

“I could see running [Annals of Time] and Beach Patrol in a race such as the Manhattan,” he said, referring to the Grade 1 at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Belmont Park in June. “Camelot Kitten has had a big campaign. We’ll look for races at a mile and a mile and an eighth.”

Camelot Kitten won four graded stakes for 3-year-olds on turf at distances ranging from 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 miles in Kentucky and New York this year. Beach Patrol won the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Arlington Park in August.

Annals of Time has had three starts this year. Owned by Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence, Annals of Time beat maidens in his lone start at 2 in November 2015 and did not race again until September. By Temple City, Annals of Time was third to Camelot Kitten and Beach Patrol in the Grade 3 Hill Prince Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Belmont Park on Oct. 8 in his stakes debut.

Annals of Time has won 2 of 4 starts and has earned $289,000. He was purchased for $80,000 as a yearling at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale in Kentucky.

“He had some minor physical problems, and we gave him time,” Brown said. “He got to show what he’s capable of.”

Frank Conversation, third in the Hollywood Derby, could make his second trip to the Middle East later this month.

Trainer Doug O’Neill said Sunday that Frank Conversation has been invited to the $500,000 Qatar International Derby in Qatar on Dec. 29, and that the race at 1 1/4 miles on turf is being strongly considered by owners Paul and Zillah Reddam. Frank Conversation won the Grade 2 Twilight Derby on turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. Last March, Frank Conversation was last of seven in the $2 million United Arab Emirates Derby on dirt in Dubai.

“We’ll consider it and see how he’s doing,” O’Neill said.
