DEL MAR, Calif. - Anisette won her American debut with an attractive late rally in an allowance race at Santa Anita on May 29. The outcome foreshadowed a dynamic first career stakes win in Saturday’s Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf at Del Mar. Ridden confidently by Umberto Rispoli, Anisette ($6.20) closed from 10th in a field of 14 with a wide rally to win by a convincing 2 1/2 lengths over 12-1 Ocean Club. Anisette, who was sent off favored, was timed in 1:34.84 and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 84. For a filly who was closer to the back of the field than the front with a half-mile remaining, Anisette had a clean trip at a pivotal time on the turn. “The fractions were strong, and I was happy with where she was,” winning trainer Leonard Powell said. “Umberto found a seam and she finished fast. :: Visit the Del Mar Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies, and more. “It’s a good final time.” Ocean Club, the winner of the Marsha Washington Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic track at Gulfstream Park on June 10, closed from fifth to finish second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of 35-1 And Tell Me Nolies. Ocean Club had her graded stakes debut in the $204,500 San Clemente. “I had a good trip,” jockey Drayden Van Dyke said. “It opened up at the top of the lane. We got outrun by a better horse today.” The Wild Grazer finished fourth, followed by Delight, Olivia Twist, Flying Connection, Wed, Paris Secret, Ancient Peace, Comanche Country, Spicybug, Broadway Girls and Fast and Shiny. Ancient Peace and Fast and Shiny dueled through an opening quarter-mile in 22.33 seconds before Fast and Shiny took the lead on the backstretch through a half-mile in 46.68. She faded from contention in early stretch as Anisette reached contention with a wide move. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, the British-bred Anisette has won 3 of 5 starts and earned $166,871. Anisette has won her last three starts, a streak that began with a four-length win in an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic track at Wolverhampton Racecourse in Britain last December. Powell said Anisette will be pointed to the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Aug. 19. “If everything goes well, she’ll be in the gate,” Powell said. OSUNITAS RECAP The Del Mar turf course has defined the career of Warrens Candy Girl, the upset winner of Saturday’s $134,500 Osunitas Stakes for fillies and mares. Warrens Candy Girl won for the fifth time in her 12th start on the course in the Osunitas at a mile, closing from 10th in a field of 14 to win by a length over 6-1 Awake at Midnyte. Owned by Ben and Sally Warren, Warrens Candy Girl may be switching surfaces for her next start. Trainer Craig Lewis said Warrens Candy Girl will be considered for the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on dirt on Aug. 5. The $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes for California-bred fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on turf on Aug. 20 is another option. Warrens Candy Girl won the 2022 Solana Beach Stakes. In the Osunitas, jockey Ramon Vazquez urged Warrens Candy Girl into contention with a wide rally on the turn. Warren’s Candy Girl took the lead in the final sixteenth, finishing in 1:35.35. Warrens Candy Girl earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 81. “I got a good trip,” Vazquez said. “I had a good position. I kept her outside and out of trouble.” Awake At Midnyte finished a half-length in front of 5-1 Nevisian Sunrise. Freedom Flyer, Symphony Perfect, Lucky Girl, Canoodling, Ascendancy, Una Chiquitita Over Attracted, Very Scary, Anthonys Cleopatra, Honey Pants and Ladywearsthering completed the order of finish in a field of 14. Not all the runners had clean trips. Only 3 1/2 lengths separated the first nine finishers. Nevisian Sunrise and Lucky Girl raced in traffic. The Osunitas was restricted to non-winners of a first-place purse of $50,000 or more, other than a stakes for statebreds, at a mile or over since Sept. 1. Warrens Candy Girl, by Clubhouse Ride, has won 6 of 24 starts and earned $499,360. The Osunitas was Warren Candy Girl’s second win in three starts. She won an allowance race at a mile on turf at Santa Anita in April. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
