Angel Gift wins at Bay Meadows

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Odds-on favorite Angel Gift ($3.40), who had met Azeri three times and finished within 4 1/4 lengths each time, had no trouble winning the 1 1/16-mile $60,550 Golden Poppy Handicap at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

Angel Gift sat off the early pace of Erica's Smile, moved into contention on her own and beat Lindsay Jean by three lengths in 1:41.47.

"The race set up perfect," winning jockey Russell Baze said. "I hadn't asked her when she moved on her own. She was looking around down the stretch so I tapped her just to keep her mind on business. I never thought anyone would beat us."

Angel Gift earned $33,550 to lift her career earnings to $261,880 with four wins in 16 starts.
