Anderson takes Iowa Sprint with Glengarry, Iowa Distaff with Insensitive

Trainer Doug Anderson saddled the winners of two of the four stakes on the first night of the Iowa Festival of Racing at Prairie Meadows on Friday, when Glengarry delivered a resilient win in the $100,000 Iowa Sprint and Insensitive defeated a quality field in the $100,000 Iowa Distaff.

The festival continues Saturday night with the running of four more stakes, including the Grade 3, $300,000 Cornhusker Handicap and the $250,000 Iowa Derby that marks the return of Magnitude.

Glengarry ($2.80) moved to the lead at the start of the Iowa Sprint and set fractions of 22.06 for the opening quarter and 44.38 for the half-mile while racing off the rail. Raymond moved in on the leader on the turn and threatened into the stretch, while Second I D bid up the rail, but Glengarry had more and went on to cover six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.09.

“He ran great,” winning rider Tyler Bacon said in an interview broadcast by Prairie Meadows. “I just let him break away from there and he did his thing.”

Glengarry won by a 1 1/2 lengths over Second I D.

Anderson co-owns Glengarry, who is a son of Maximus Mischief, with Aaron Kennedy and Toby Joseph.

Insensitive won her second consecutive stakes at the meet when she rallied for a length win over pacesetter Wild Bout Hilary in the Iowa Distaff.

Insensitive ($16.20) had won the local prep, the Jack Bishop, heading into Friday. She was content to sit off Wild Bout Hilary’s fractions of 24.97 seconds for the opening quarter, 49.59 for the half-mile and 1:13.80. Insensitive went on to cover the 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares in 1:44.98.

Anderson co-owns the daughter of Karun with Rose Hill Farm and Charles G. Bush.

Jareth Loveberry was aboard Insensitive, who gave him the first of his two stakes wins on the card Friday.

Prairie Gold Lassie

Loveberry’s second winner came with Sassy C W in the $100,000 Prairie Gold Lassie. She set a quick pace and held off a late-charging Best Friend to improve her record to 3 for 3.

“This is a very nice filly,” Loveberry said in an interview conducted by Prairie Meadows. “She’s very fast.

“That’s her key. Just get out of the gate.”

Sassy C W ($4.60) established a clear lead from the bell, setting fractions of 21.80 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.79 for the half-mile. Best Friend came up the rail and was a late threat, but Sassy C W held for a neck win over that one, while covering the 5 1/2 furlongs for 2-year-old fillies in 1:04.72.

Larry Rivelli trains the daughter of Yaupon for Patricia’s Hope and Carolyn Wilson. It was the second straight stakes win for Sassy C W, who won the Astoria at Saratoga.

* Won Happy Mama ($16.40) set a quick pace and prevailed in the $100,000 Saylorville, winning the six furlong race for fillies and mares by three-quarters of a length over Jersey Pearl. Elvin Gonzalez was aboard Won Happy Mama, who after putting up fractions of 22.03 for the opening quarter and 44.51 for the half-mile went on to cover the distance in 1:09.90. Trainer Travis Murphy owns the daughter of Runhappy with Matt Trent and Poindexter Thoroughbreds.
