Anderson has Speers surrounded

Adam Goss|Sep 01, 2005

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Trainer Carl Anderson sends out the uncoupled trio of Lord Shogun, Albarino, and Nugrayontheblock against five rivals at Assiniboia Downs in Saturday's $40,000 R.J. Speers for 3-year-olds and upward at 1 1/16 miles.

Lord Shogun has won two of his last three races, including the allowance prep for the R.J. Speers on Aug. 19. A 6-year-old son of Maudlin, Lord Shogun appears to be a horse who needs the lead. The two times this year he didn't make the lead, he finished seventh in the Wheat City Stakes and sixth in the Free Press Stakes.

Lord Shogun will break outside of Northern Affair, who will likely oppose him for the early lead.

Albarino has won three of his last four starts, with two of those victories coming in restricted stakes.

Nugrayontheblock has failed to win in four starts this year but comes into this race off his best result, a third-place finish in the Aug. 19 allowance prep. A 6-year-old son of With Approval, Nugrayontheblock has been hindered by speed-biased racetracks in last two starts and could improve over a fair surface.

Northern Affair finished second in the Wheat City two starts ago. Most recently, Northern Affair finished second, 2 1/4 lengths behind Lord Shogun, in the Aug. 19 prep.

Don't Kiss N Tell and Sand Rush may also challenge Lord Shogun for the early lead.

The field rounds out with Silver Fury and Beau Ring, both well beaten in allowance races in their last start.

* Raggidy Rowe ($4.90), under Travis Hightower, overtook Arthurlooksgood late to win last Sunday's Harry Jeffery Stakes. Resurgent finished third. It was the first stakes win here for trainer Mel Davis, who bred Raggidy Rowe in Oregon and owns the gelding in partnership with Heather Skeoch.

Raggidy Rowe, who completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:53.40, improved his lifetime mark to 18-6-1-2 with earning of $66,201.

* The stakes-winning filly Ola Docura suffered a career-ending injury to her suspensory ligament during a workout last Saturday. A 4-year-old daughter of Meadowlake out of the Relaunch mare Darling Sola, Ola Docura will likely be sold at auction as a broodmare prospect.
