Ande Phipps, family matriarch, dies at 82

Andrea “Ande” Phipps, who was married to longtime Jockey Club chairman Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps for 46 years before his passing in 2016, died Tuesday in New York City after a brief illness surrounded by her children, according to a release sent out by The Jockey Club. She was 82.
The Phipps Stable is one of the most recognized names in Thoroughbred racing having marked its 100th anniversary this year. In partnership with Vinnie and Teresa Viola’s St. Elias Stable, the Phippses are the co-breeders and co-owners of Golden Tempo, this year’s Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner.
Ande Phipps attended Saratoga the day Golden Tempo won the Belmont.
Among the graded stakes winners that ran exclusively for the Phipps Stable in the past 20 years were Smuggler, Good Reward, Pine Island, Persistently, Point of Entry, Boisterous, Imagining, and Mr. Speaker. The Phipps Stable campaigned countless other stakes and graded stakes winners in various partnerships through the years.
Ande Phipps was a native of Oneonta, N.Y., and she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before pursuing a career as a registered nurse.
She is survived by six children: Kayce Reagan Hughes, Kelley Reagan Farish, Lilly Phipps Cardwell, Daisy Phipps Pulito, Samantha Phipps Alvarez, and Ogden Phipps II, as well as 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A private celebration of Ande Phipps’s life will be held at a later date.
