Ampere makes Group 1 debut in Grand Prix de Paris
Ampere, an undefeated colt trained by Andre Fabre whose dam was a two-time Grade 1 winner in California, will make his Group 1 debut in Tuesday’s $666,840 Grand Prix de Paris for 3-year-old colts and fillies at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris.
Ampere won his stakes debut in the Group 2 Prix Hocquart at Longchamp on May 10, a month after winning his debut in a conditions race there April 9. Ampere, by Galileo, will be ridden by Mickael Barzalona.
The colt is out of Amorama, a multiple stakes winner in the U.S. in the 2000s when trained by Julio Canani and Bobby Frankel. Amorama won two Grade 1 races at Del Mar – the 2004 Del Mar Oaks and 2005 John Mabee Stakes.
Ampere is part of a field of six in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris that includes two supplemental entries for approximately $48,000 – Erupt and Storm the Stars. The Grand Prix de Paris is run at 1 1/2 miles on turf.
Erupt, a colt by Dubawi, is unbeaten in three starts, including the Group 3 Prix du Lys at Chantilly on June 14. Storm the Stars was third in the English Oaks at Epsom Downs on June 6 and second in the Irish Oaks at The Curragh on June 27. By Sea the Stars, Storm the Stars is trained in England by William Haggas.
Another contender is Balios, who won the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf for 3-year-olds June 9 at Royal Ascot in his third career start for trainer David Simcock.
On the same Tuesday program at Longchamp, Frine, a 5-year-old mare, will have her first start of 2015 in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at 1 3/4 miles on turf against males.
Trained by Carlos Laffon-Parais, Frine won the Group 2 Prix de Royallieu for fillies and mares at 1 9/16 miles on turf at Longchamp last October. The field also includes Spiritjim, who won the Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly in 2014; and Bathyrhon and Glaring, the first two finishers of the Group 2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at Longchamp on May 24. Bathyrhon was later fifth in the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup on June 18.
