HENDERSON, Ky. – With nearly 3,900 victories in a training career dating to 1987, Tom Amoss has pretty much done it all. Amoss has won Grade 1 races at Churchill Downs, Saratoga, Oaklawn Park, and elsewhere, just as he’s won with bottom-level claimers on his main circuits in Louisiana, Kentucky, and Indiana. His all-encompassing reputation, however, hasn’t necessarily included an acuity with 2-year-olds, although that seems to be changing forthwith. Since May 20, Amoss has won maiden-special races with five different 2-year-olds – four of them on debut – which is the type of feat normally reserved for Wesley Ward or Steve Asmussen or other trainers who tend to place a particular emphasis on having their young horses race-ready at an earlier juncture than their peers. Kneesnhips, a filly from the first crop of the 8-year-old sire Connect, was the latest Amoss winner, rallying from last to prevail Sunday on the Ellis Park turf. The four earlier winners all came at the Churchill Downs spring meet, those being Cartel Queen, Spanish Idol, Pipeline Girl, and the only colt in the group, Ottoman Empire. “It’s been great,” Amoss said this week by phone from Keeneland while crediting bloodstock agent Lauren Carlisle for her behind-the-scenes work in recruiting him most of the 2-year-olds. “We usually don’t do as well this early with our babies, but these horses have come to us very well schooled. It’s a credit to the whole team.” With the Churchill barn area closed until Sept. 8 for turf renovation, Amoss currently is split between Keeneland and Indiana Grand, the suburban Indianapolis track where he is the all-time winningest trainer with 414 victories since it opened in 2003. He’ll be sending 26 horses soon to Saratoga, and when Keeneland shutters Aug. 1 to all but its year-round trainers in the Rice Road stabling area, he’ll send that string to Turfway Park. “Lots of moving around this time of year,” he said. At Saratoga, the Grade 3 Schuylverville on the July 15 opening-day card is under consideration for all three of the fillies who won at Churchill, while the Grade 3 Sanford on July 17 is the target for Ottoman Empire. Kneesnhips could run back in a turf stakes yet to be determined. “We’re pretty excited about them all,” said Amoss.
