American Starlet, Classicstateofmind top speed-filled allowance

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Three-year-olds will be in the spotlight on Wednesday in the first of two allowance races on the card, a five-furlong dash carded for the turf that drew a strong field of 10 to vie for a $61,000 purse.

The lineup is loaded with speed from top to bottom and is led by the Wesley Ward-trained American Starlet, a gate-to-wire two-length winner here last month on the turf in her only start, and Classicstateofmind, second behind the odds-on Lucci under conditions similar to Wednesday’s race here five weeks ago in his 3-year-old debut.

American Starlet, who also faced males in her debut, had her win flattered when runner-up Big Invasion returned to dominate maiden company here on Saturday. The same can be said for Classicstateofmind, whose two immediate victims on graduation day, Living Water and Magniloquent, also came back to win at next asking.

The field also includes Living Water and his stablemate Brit’s Candyman, a well-graded maiden winner in his last start, and American Starlet’s stablemate Just Say When.

The race shares top billing on the eight race program with a one-mile allowance test over the main track for Florida-bred fillies and mares, topped by runaway maiden winner Beth’s Dream and the vastly more experienced and more accomplished Battle Cry.
