American Runaway takes Ruidoso Futurity

American Runaway became the lone horse eligible for a $4 million bonus tied to Ruidoso Downs's three major futurities for Quarter Horses after he rolled to a 1 1/4-length win in the Grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity on Sunday.

To collect the bonus, American Runaway will now have to win both the Rainbow Futurity on July 25 and the All American Futurity on Sept. 6.

American Runaway ($3.20) led wire to wire in the Ruidoso to win the 350-yard race in 17.46 seconds. It was the second strong performance at the meet from the horse, who won his trial by more than four lengths, in a blazing 17.13 seconds. Cody Jensen was aboard for both races for trainer Paul Jones.

American Runaway earned $250,000 for owners Sammy and Johnny Martinez and Bobby Cox. Earlier this year, the horse was second in the Grade 1 Remington Park Futurity.

Treason finished second in the Ruidoso, a head in front of third-place finisher Bodacious Dash.
