American Pharoah colts top second session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale
A pair of colts from the first crop of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah led the way as the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale in Lexington, Ky., continued with solid figures in its second session.
Led by American Pharoah's duo, sold for $310,000 and $300,000, a total of 256 yearlings sold on Tuesday for gross receipts of $9,068,000. The revenues marked an 8 percent increase from the second of four sessions last year, when 237 yearlings sold for $8,415,000.
The session average price was $35,422, nearly even with the $35,506 average in the comparable session last year. The median, $15,000, spiked 25 percent from $12,000 last year. The day's buyback rate was 18 percent, a strong improvement from 25 percent last year.
"Obviously pleased when you see a continuation of a lot of horses getting sold," Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning said of the buyback rate, which has been improved in both sessions. "Good, solid trade. The market is similar to what we thought it was, what it was last year. Two good days, two more days to go."
Zayat Stables, which bred and campaigned American Pharoah, went to $310,000 for the session leader from American Pharoah, who stands at Coolmore. The Ontario-bred colt was consigned by Woods Edge Farm, as agent.
The colt is out of the winning Mr. Greeley mare Gloat, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Parading and graded stakes-placed Protesting and Parade. Their dam, Grade 3-placed On Parade, is a full sister to champion Storm Flag Flying, out of multiple Grade 1 winner My Flag. That means the session topper's fourth dam is unbeaten champion and blue hen Personal Ensign. In addition to My Flag, Personal Ensign produced Grade 1 winners Miner's Mark and Traditionally. Recent Grade 1 winners from her family include Mr Speaker and Seeking the Soul.
Earlier in the day, Alistair Roden Bloodstock landed the $300,000 American Pharoah colt from the consignment of Denali Stud, as agent.
The colt is out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare Danceinthesunlight, who has produced three starters from as many winners, led by Grade 1 winner Moreno. Danceinthesunlight is out of Canadian champion and Grade 1 winner Dancethruthedawn, whose daughter Dance With Doves is a multiple stakes producer. Dancethruthedawn is one of two Queen's Plate winners out of Canadian Triple Crown winner, Canadian Horse of the Year, and Eclipse Award winner Dance Smartly.
