American Lion retired to stud

Glenye Cain Oakford|Sep 03, 2010

Dual Grade 3 winner American Lion has been retired from racing, the colt’s owner, WInStar Farm, announced Friday. WinStar said it hasn’t determined his stud plans.

The 3-year-old Tiznow colt won the Illinois Derby this year and the Hollywood Prevue Stakes last season. He also finished third this season in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes. American Lion last ran in the Kentucky Derby, finishing 11th behind winner Super Saver, also owned by WinStar.

“American Lion had a setback after the Derby that has prevented him from getting back to his best form and fulfilling his great potential,” WinStar racing manager Elliott Walden said.

Trained by Eoin Harty, American Lion retires with a $413,600 bankroll from 3 wins, 1 second, and 1 third from 7 starts. He is out of the Storm Cat mare Storm Tide.
