Amazing Maria captures Prix Rothschild
Amazing Maria confirmed her status as the leading female miler in Europe with a third consecutive major stakes win in Sunday’s $330,000 Prix Rothschild at Deauville Racecourse in France.
Ridden by Olivier Peslier, Amazing Maria, the 9-2 second choice of eight, closed from midpack to lead in the final sixteenth. The 4-year-old Amazing Maria finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Ervedya, the even-money favorite. Ervedya, 3, was starting for the first time against older fillies and mares.
Ervedya won the French 1000 Guineas in May and the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Amazing Maria has equally outstanding credentials, having won consecutive stakes for fillies and mares in England - the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse on July 10.
Those fillies were expected to dominate the Prix Rothschild. Ervedya finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Bawina, who won the Group 3 Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud in France in May and was fourth in the Falmouth.
Amazing Maria races for Robert Ogden and trainer David O’Meara. A 4-year-old Irish-bred by Mastercraftsman, Amazing Maria has won 5 of 12 starts in her career. Her current winning streak represents by far the best span of her career.
Turfdonna takes German Oaks
Turfdonna, a filly by Doyen, won the first major stakes of her career in Sunday’s $550,000 German Oaks, a Group 1 race at 1 3/8 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies in Dusseldorf.
Ridden by Eddie Pedroza, Turfdonna (15-1) finished three-quarters of a length in front of 7-2 Nightflower in a field of 13. Owned by Australian Bloodstock Stable, Turfdonna was third in a Group 3 race in Hamburg on July 4 in a prep for Sunday’s race.
