Amalfi Coast powers home to upset Sweet Briar Too Stakes

ETOBICOKE Ontario – Longshot Amalfi Coast parlayed a perfect stalking trip into an easy 4 1/2-length victory under Justin Stein in the $112,200 Sweet Briar Too Stakes on a rainy Friday night at Woodbine.
The speedy trio of Summer Sunday, O’Keeffe, and Victory Kingdom linked up through quick splits in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.
Amalfi Coast stalked along the inside on the turn, with the favored Painting beside her and second-choice Souper Escape in the three path. O’Keeffe drifted off the rail entering the stretch, and Amalfi Coast came on through and powered away to prevail in a time of 1:15.35.
“There was tons of speed in the race,” Stein said. “I just got to sit off of them and wait for my chance to find an opening and pull the trigger.”
A hard-ridden Souper Escape secured second by a half-length over Painting, who came flying late after lacking room on the turn. Victory Kingdom, Magic Spell, O’Keeffe, and Summer Sunday completed the order of finish.
