Alysheba, Calvin Borel inducted as part of first class in Louisiana Downs Hall of Fame

Alysheba, jockey Calvin Borel, trainer Bobby Barnett, and racing executive Tom Sweeney were all inducted into the new Louisiana Downs Hall of Fame on Saturday after being selected for the honor through an online poll conducted by Louisiana Downs.
The individuals joined the previously-announced Sunday Silence, Free Spirits Joy, Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr., John Franks, Ronald Ardoin, Larry Snyder, Frank Brothers, and C.W. “Cracker” Walker.
All of the individuals were enshrined following the seventh race Saturday at Louisiana Downs.
Alysheba won the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs in 1987 following his victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Borel is a winner of more than 1,200 races at Louisiana Downs, including three titles. Barnett, a longtime trainer for Franks, won the 2004 Super Derby with Fantasticat.
◗ Louisiana Downs on Saturday will be site of The Rescue Run, a charity event featuring shelter pets. Funds raised will go to both local pet charities and aftercare for retired racehorses. There will be food trucks and other activities on the apron, as well as pet adoptions. The event starts at 11 a.m.
