Alotaluck became a stakes winner on Sunday when he moved past No Trouble in the stretch for a 2 1/2-length win in the $125,000 Mine That Bird Derby at Sunland Park. It was another 4 3/4 lengths back in third to Young Pope. The Mine That Bird Derby was one of five stakes on the closing-day card. The stakes were worth a total of $650,000. Presidential won the richest offering, the $200,000 Sunland Park Handicap. Alotaluck ($2.10) came into the Mine That Bird Derby off a runner-up finish to Stronghold in the Grade 3, $400,000 Sunland Park Derby. Stronghold returned to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on Saturday. Alotaluck, meanwhile, tracked the pace set by No Trouble on Sunday, with that one taking the field through fractions of 23.54 for the opening quarter, 47.81 for the half-mile, and 1:12.65 for six furlongs. Alotaluck moved in on No Trouble from there, and worked to get past the leader in the stretch before shaking free late and going on to cover the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:44.53. Alotaluck, who is nominated to the Triple Crown, is now 2 for 4 for earnings of $207,360. His dam, Colinda Dawn, won the Colorado Derby in 2015. Ty Garrett, who trains Alotaluck, said the Mine That Bird Derby could lead to some other derby starts in the region. Garrett trains Alotaluck for his aunt, Eleanor Martin. “I think we’ll probably take a look at some of the derbies in the Midwest, later on in the summer,” Garrett said, “look at races like the Iowa Derby, maybe the Oaklahoma Derby. We’ll try to hit some of those. He’s a California-bred. There’s good money there, too.” Triple for Hebert The Mine That Bird Derby was one of three stakes wins on the card for jockey Lindsey Hebert. He began his run in the $125,000 Island Fashion, guiding Only One America to a 5 1/2-length win over Deviletta. Only One America ($12.40) set the pace in her two-turn debut, putting up fractions of 24.66 seconds for the opening quarter, 49.79 for the half-mile, and 1:14.34 for six furlongs before going on to cover the mile for 3-year-olds fillies in 1:38.23. Todd Fincher trains Only One America for her breeders, J. Kirk and Judy Robison. Only One America is a daughter of Marking and out of the mare That’s the Ideal, who also produced five-time stakes winner Competitive Idea. Only One America is now 2 for 9 for earnings of $123,580. Hebert proceeded to win the $100,000 Peppers Pride with Corrina Corrina. She was a four-length winner of what was her ninth career stakes victory. Corrina Corrina has now compiled a career record of 13 for 26 for earnings of $893,870. Corrina Corrina ($2.10) trailed early as First Again set fractions of 25.24 for the opening quarter and 50.55 for the half-mile. Corrina Corrina proceeded to pick off all of her rivals and went on to cover the one mile for fillies and mares bred in New Mexico in 1:38.41. Gary Cross trains Corrina Corrina for her breeder, Derrick Jenkins. She is a daughter of Mr. Trieste. Presidential in thriller Presidential won a three-way battle to the wire in the Sunland Park Handicap. He was a neck winner over Bender, while it was another three-quarters of a length back in third to last year’s winner, Mine That Star. Presidential ($7.20) stalked the pace in third as Tulane Tryst jumped out to a clear lead in the 1 1/8-mile race and set fractions of 24.02 for the opening quarter, 47.78 for the half-mile and 1:10.87 for six furlongs. Mine That Star moved to the fore and Presidential followed, and the two battled in the stretch as Bender rallied to join the fray. Presidential fought between rivals to the wire, and covered the distance in 1:49.26. Luis Fuentes was aboard Presidential for trainer Steve Asmussen. Courtlandt Farms owns the son of Pioneerof the Nile. He has now won 5 of 20 starts and earned $517,660. In other stakes, Let Him Be ($4) improved his record to 7 for 8 with his 1 1/2-length win over Thunder Dome in the $100,000 New Mexico State University.
