LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three rich allowances are part of a late pick-five sequence that ends the second-to-last program of the Keeneland spring meet Thursday. The 50-cent pick five spans races 5-9, with the co-features going as races 5, 7, and 8. Bettors can gorge themselves on additional multi-race wagering at the same time, given that two of the allowances are part of the $3-minimum Keeneland Turf Pick 3 comprises races 5-7-9. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern. A 70 percent rain chance and a high in the mid-60s are in the long-range local forecast. Friday is closing day at the 15-day meet, with Churchill Downs starting its spring meet the following night. Here’s a quick rundown of those Thursday highlights: Race 5: Wicked Fast performed creditably when earning Beyer Speed Figures in the low 90s in all three of the graded turf marathons in his division hosted this winter at Gulfstream Park, so he’s likely to be a slight favorite for Mike Maker and Tyler Gaffalione when dropping into this $120,000 second-level race at 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Still, the 4-year-old gelding is on a nine-race losing streak, so there will be tote support for several others trying to extend it to 10. :: Bet Keeneland with Confidence: Get DRF PPs, Picks, and Betting Strategies. Race 7: An oversubscribed lineup of 3-year-old fillies will go a mile on the turf when trying to make it through their first allowance condition for a $110,000 purse. Venencia, a French-bred import getting first Lasix in her North American debut, surely will draw major action for the high-profile team of Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz Jr., but there are quite a few others who also merit close scrutiny. Be My Sunshine, second at this same level last month at Gulfstream for Gaffalione and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., is one of her top challengers, along with Boudica and Gromantine, both exiting the same Tampa Bay Downs race they can build on. Sleeper types include Desert Tempest, Tammy Tap Tap Tap, and Miss Riddler. Sixteen are entered but only as many as 12 will be allowed to start. Race 8: Bret Calhoun sends out Non Violence on a noteworthy cutback as the 4-year-old filly exits a couple of Fair Grounds routes that found her wanting in the late going. It doesn’t seem like a bad idea at all, as she’s eligible to loom a major presence throughout this $110,000 first-level race. She breaks from the outside post in a field of seven fillies and mares going seven furlongs. A second Calhoun filly Ain’t Broke also figures in the mix when going turf-to-dirt on a similar turnback, along with Send for Me, Take Care, and Braganza. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
