HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Scot’s Law is among a handful of promising 3-year-old fillies who could use Thursday’s eighth race at Oaklawn Park as a springboard to upcoming stakes races like the local Fantasy. The first-level allowance will be run over 1 1/16 miles. There is a pick six carryover of $14,967. Scot’s Law, who is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Scottish Lassie, will start as one of the top choices in an eight-horse field that includes stakes winner Actis, notable maiden winner Sticker Shock, and the stakes-placed Spitfire. Scot’s Law made her stakes debut last out and was third in the $150,000 Year’s End on Dec. 27 at Oaklawn. The winner and runner-up from that race, Counting Stars and Newtown Pike, are both entered back in the Grade 3, $750,000 Honeybee on Sunday at Oaklawn. :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! We want to space her races out a little bit just because she had four good races as a 2-year-old and we’re trying to work on her mentality a little bit. “She’s still trying to piece things together, and we’re trying to make sure that we get it right, not only physically, but mentally, too, with her. I think she’s proven that she’s got some ability, and we’re just trying to see if we can use this allowance as a stepping-stone to bigger and better things.” One area Ortiz has been working on with Scot’s Law is composure ahead of her races. “She’s a very sensible filly,” he said. “She gets a little hot in the paddock, but we’re just kind of working on that, her pre-race energy. We’re working on that, so that she saves it for the race. “She’s been schooling on a weekly basis, and her energy in the paddock has gone down significantly. She’s just a sweetheart. They’re babies. You’ve still got to show them what’s right and what’s wrong.” Luis Saez has the mount from post 2 for Millard R. Seldin Revocable Trust. “I always like to get a good break,” Ortiz said. “If she breaks on top, it would be nice to see her either in front, controlling the pace, or just sitting right off them stalking. She does just as well stalking.” Sticker Shock is coming off a wire-to-wire maiden special weight win at this distance Nov. 29 at Churchill Downs. Search Party, who finished third in the race, has since won the Martha Washington at Oaklawn and is entered back in the Honeybee. Cristian Torres has the mount on Sticker Shock from post 5 for Gary and Mary West and trainer Brad Cox. Sticker Shock is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Fighting Mad and owns the field’s best last-race Beyer Speed Figure, a 75. Actis rallied from last to win the $100,000 My Trusty Cat in November at Delta Downs and was flattered when runner-up Not a Lady returned in her next start to win the $75,000 Toby Keith Stakes at Remington Park. Spitfire was second in the $100,000 Sorority at a mile in August at Monmouth Park. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
