Joe Sheisty stumbled and got knocked around at the start, never coming close to the lead. Nobals stumbled slightly and stalked the leaders. And so it was that Bear River, pressing the pace, wore down pacesetting Coppola to win the $250,000 contest by a neck.

Destino d’Oro, winning two of her first three starts, just missing a graded-stakes score in her lone loss, looked like a very nice deep-closing turf-route filly. On Sunday, in the Pucker Up at Ellis Park, Destino d’Oro revealed a new tactical dimension and looked like an even better horse running away to a 3 3/4-length victory.

Bourbon and Ginger is expected to start in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 6 after a hard-fought win in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs in her debut on Saturday.

Sierra Leone bested his familiar nemesis Fierceness when winning Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney Stakes. For his expected next assignment, Sierra Leone will try to exact some revenge on Mindframe - a stablemate of Fierceness - in the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Aug. 31.
