To say it’s been a big year for the Taylor Made operation would be putting it mildly. Over the past eight months, the Nicholasville, Ky., operation has seen sales graduate American Pharoah win the Triple Crown, purchased a minority stake in dual classic winner California Chrome with plans to stand him at the farm upon his retirement, sold yearlings from the final crop of late cornerstone sire Unbridled’s Song, and led all consignors at the Keeneland January sale of horses of all ages by gross receipts. As historic as the year has been, though, the busiest times are yet to come. DRF Breeding sales editor Joe Nevills spoke with Duncan Taylor in mid-August about the upcoming sale, Taylor’s philosophies, and his historic year.

While the inimitable Stryker Phd will be the main attraction Sunday during Washington Cup Day at Emerald Downs, Lady Rosberg can carve out a historical niche of her own when she starts as a prohibitive favorite in the $50,000 Comcast Sportsnet Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Square Dancer will try to keep his undefeated record at Hastings intact when he runs Sunday in the $50,000 S. W. Randall Plate Handicap. The 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and up drew 10 horses and goes as race 6 on a nine-race card that begins at 12:50 p.m. Pacific.

Forest Mouse, Alsono, and Southern California import Nextdoorneighbor make for an interesting renewal of the $55,000 Premiere Cup Handicap on Sunday at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M. The race is the first stakes of the 56-date mixed meet that opened Saturday for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. The season runs through Dec. 15.

Ready for Rye will certainly be the horse to beat in Sunday’s $100,000 Allied Forces Stakes, but the value may lie elsewhere in the six-furlong race for 3-year-old turf sprinters at Belmont Park.

Academic will try to become the first filly to win the British Columbia Derby since 1956, when Ali Miss earned $3,125 for her win in the 1 1/8-mile race. Academic will receive considerably more – $137,500 – if she wins the 70th running of the Grade 3, $250,000 race that drew nine horses. Post time for the B.C. Derby is 4:42 p.m. Pacific. At 121 pounds, Academic will receive five pounds from the field.

Strategy will play a big role Sunday in the outcome of the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks at Hastings. Six horses entered the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, and five will want to be involved right from the start, including the likely favorite Morning Coffee.

After a three-quarter-length defeat in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron Stakes on Polytrack last time out, Strut the Course will return to turf for Sunday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Canadian Stakes over 1 1/8 miles at Woodbine.
