Road to the Derby analysis: Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Lovable Lyss to be tested for stamina

Hugh Robertson probably wouldn't mind if you called him a bottom feeder, not if you were talking about his approach to horse auctions. Robertson has no problem scouring the bottom of the barrel looking for bargains, and through the years he has found plenty of them.

Ride On Curlin, Eagle head Tenacious Stakes

Ride On Curlin, Eagle head Tenacious Stakes

With the recently implemented week-distant draw system in place, the six stakes to be run Dec. 19 at Fair Grounds were assembled Saturday. Some of the races are decent, but with purses of just $50,000 and $60,000, the stakes offer about the same money as a maiden race over the inner dirt track at Aqueduct right now, which puts a low ceiling on their quality.

For String King, milestone comes with disappointment

On paper, it looked like only something crazy could get String King beat Saturday in the Louisiana Champions Day Turf, a race String King had won three times before and in which he was the 4-5 post-time favorite. The starting gate clanged and opened, horses and riders jousted for early position, and before a quarter-mile had been run, something crazy happened.

Gulfstream: With Rhythm should move forward off layoff

With Rhythm should move forward off layoff

With Rhythm looked like a winner turning into the stretch only to flatten out unexpectedly through the final furlong and finish a disappointing fourth as the 2-1 choice when making his U.S. debut last spring at Gulfstream. With Rhythm hasn't run since, but will return to action as the likely favorite once again off the layoff when going postward under similar optional claiming and allowance conditions in Thursday's $43,000 main event to be decided, weather permitting, at a mile on the turf.

Aqueduct: Don't Be So Salty eyes Turfway

Don't Be So Salty eyes Turfway

Don’t Be So Salty, who won the Display Stakes at Woodbine on Nov. 29, is among trainer Gary Contessa’s 16-horse string at the Palm Meadows training center in south Florida for the winter. But Don’t Be So Salty will be targeting Turfway Park’s series for 3-year-olds, the trainer said, because of the gelding’s 2-for-2 record over synthetic surfaces.
