In the spring of 2005, Afleet Alex was a talented 3-year-old, winning the Arkansas Derby and the last two legs of the Triple Crown – the Preakness and Belmont stakes. But did he pass on his affinity for dirt routes to his son Alex Again? That’s a tricky question to answer. Alex Again will make his two-turn and stakes debut in Saturday’s $100,000 Parx Derby. He is one of just two multiple winners in a field of eight 3-year-olds going a mile and 70 yards. Alex Again has the same connections as his famous father – trainer John Servis and owner Cash Is King. All five of his starts have come in sprints, most recently a three-quarter-length score going 6 1/2 furlongs in a first-level optional $50,000 claimer at Parx on April 11. The only other horse in Saturday’s field who has won twice is the Maryland shipper Greek Prince, whose wins came in a seven-furlong maiden claimer and a first-level optional $50,000 claimer going a one-turn mile at Laurel. Bonus Points, the 8-5 morning-line favorite, will be getting class relief after finishing far back about a month ago in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial in New York.
