Alcomo turns tables in Greenwood Cup

Alcomo was unable to stay with Eldaafer and Nite Light six weeks ago in the slop in the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park, but he had no trouble with those rivals Saturday in the $200,000 Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park.

The victory in the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup, a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In race, assured Alcomo a spot in the Nov. 7 BC Marathon at Santa Anita.

Alcomo ($13.20), with Willie Martinez in the saddle, was content to bide his time early as Luna Park set the early pace while being pressed by Eldaafer through a mile in 1:43.76. Alcomo moved toward the front approaching the final turn and was a head behind Eldaafer, when Eldaafer made the lead at the quarter pole.

Alcomo took the lead in the stretch and drew clear by 1 3/4 lengths over Alaazo, who came from last after a mile to finish second, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Eldaafer. The final time over a fast track was 2:31.88.

Nite Light, the 3-10 favorite in the six-horse field, stalked the pace from the rail, made a bid into the final turn, but came up empty, finishing fifth.

Nite Light took $53,772 of the $63,079 in the show pool, leading to show payouts of $16.40, $14.60, and $10.80.

Alcomo, a 6-year-old Brazilian-bred, is owned by Abdul Rahman Al Jasmi Racing and trained by Eduardo Caramori.

Peppy Addy: Neeyo all the way

Neeyo broke on top and led all the way when making his first stakes start in the seven-furlong, $75,000 Peppy Addy for registered Pennsylvania-bred 3-year-olds.

Neeyo, with jockey Jose Flores up, repelled a bid by 9-5 favorite Gus Who on the turn and then opened up through the stretch to score by 4 3/4 lengths. He completed the distance on a fast track in 1:22.57.

Gus Who finished second, two lengths in front of St John's Gospel.

Neeyo, who returned $10.60 as the third choice in the wagering, came into the race off a victory in a six-furlong, $40,000 maiden claiming race in his second start. He is trained by Dee Curry and owned by Ghost Pines.

Caught in the Rain: 'Haven' draws off

Sky Haven pulled away from Puddy de Luca in midstretch on her way to a 4 1/2-length victory in the $75,000 Caught in the Rain for registered Pennsylvania-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Sky Haven ($4), the favorite in a field reduced to five after six scratches, stayed about a length behind Puddy de Luca until making a move on the turn of the seven-furlong race. The pair matched strides until midstretch, when Sky Haven edged clear under jockey John Velazquez. Puddy de Luca held second by 9 1/4 lengths over Ms Mia.

Sky Haven, by Sky Mesa, covered the distance in 1:22.36. She improved her record to 3-3-1 in 7 starts for owner Elite Racing Company and trainer Steve Asmussen.
