Albahr takes Summer Stakes, completes sweep for Godolphin, Appleby, Dettori

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - After Wild Beauty won the Grade 1 Natalma on Sunday at Woodbine, Albahr made it a sweep of the two Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifiers for 2-year-olds on the card for Godolphin, trainer Charlie Appleby, and jockey Frankie Dettori by winning the Summer Stakes.
Like Wild Beauty, Albahr broke slowly in the one-mile turf route, and then bided his time in seventh on the backstretch, as First Empire set honest fractions on a clear lead.
Albahr ($3.30) made his way into contention early in the stretch, and then hit the front nearing the eighth pole en route to a 2 1/4-length tally, in a time of 1:35.77 over the good ground.

The 9-1 maiden Grafton Street came from the rear of the nine-horse field to finish a clear second over Degree of Risk. First Empire faded to fourth, and was followed by Dripping Gold, Ready for the Lady, Luckman, Heat Merchant, and Souper Legacy.
“He’s done it nice, very similar to the filly,” assistant trainer Alex Merriam said. “They’ve gone hard up front. Frankie gave a great ride. He had a good trip around, and kicked on and put a good distance between them. It was impressive.”
Albahr had won his three previous outings in England, including a listed stakes at Salisbury. The gelded son of Dubawi and the Street Cry mare Falls of Lora banked $240,000 of the $404,400 purse.
