After the deluge, a Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream

Mike Welsch|Jun 13, 2024
Black Belt wins at GP Feb 17 2024
Lauren King/Coglianese Photos Black Belt may have a pace advantage in the eighth race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

First there was rain, and plenty of it, earlier this week at Gulfstream Park. It is followed by the rainbow. The Rainbow 6 to be precise. The wager should attract plenty of action from bettors chasing a carryover of just more than $444,000 on Saturday.

Torrential rains pelted the track, causing racing to be canceled on Thursday and Friday. As a result of interrupted training, Gulfstream officials have delayed a mandatory payout in the Rainbow 6 from Saturday until a date to be determined later this month.

The rain ultimately could have an effect on the final results of Saturday’s Rainbow 6, which encompasses races 6 through 11 on the card. The sequence includes a pair of turf races – beginning with the $95,000 Powder Break Stakes – both of which could wind up being switched to the synthetic Tapeta course.

Race 6

Maiden claimers go seven furlongs on the main track with class-dropping Bigbouquetofroses and British Empress, the latter adding blinkers and returning to the main track, hard to leave out of the equation. First-time starter R Disaster also is a must-use for the potent team of jockey Edgard Zayas and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Sarah’s Dream is an intriguing possibility for those who wish to spread a bit further while looking for some value. She is exiting a long layoff but has plenty of works under her belt and is getting Lasix for the first time from her new trainer, Jose D’Angelo.

Race 7

A familiar-looking group that has taken turns beating one another in the past makes this race a dangerous one. Expecting an honest pace from Streaking Grey and Wicklow Gal, so we’ll try to narrow things down a bit and use the in-form, late-running Nana Fanny along with Dubstep (tossing her latest) and class-droppers Boston Princess and Don’t Get Picked in hopes of staying alive.

Race 8

A relative lack of any real pace in the co-feature is not lost on trainer Peter Walder, who said he would likely have Black Belt come away from his outside post with the intent of possibly trying to steal this one on the front end if he can while returning to a more suitable spot on Saturday. Could he be a single? Perhaps, although Shaq Diesel obviously demands respect. He will need a little pace help, although he should find himself closer during the early stages stretching back to a mile. We’ll try to get around the Joseph-trained pair of key contenders of Lord Miles, whose return was a disappointing one, and Positive Review, off that relatively dull showing trying two turns last month in Tampa.

Race 9

The Powder Break is Saturday’s main event. The question at press time is will it be decided, as scheduled, on the grass or be switched to the Tapeta track? Either way, Swoonatra and Wide West figure to provide some early pace along with Joseph’s Angel Nadeshko, one of the likely favorites, who could find herself a bit vulnerable as a result. Her stablemate Towser has the right running style to benefit from the projected pace scenario and is coming off her best yet in the Monroe, although it’s worth noting she’s yet to win a race on turf or the synthetic. Jan’s Girl can handle either surface and already has a victory over Towser on her résumé. No Valla steps up but is sharp now; would surely include on the ticket but perhaps only if the headliner stays on turf.

Race 10

Would try to get away cheaply in leg five and use only Celestial Gaze and Luni Sima. D’Angelo thought enough about Celestial Gaze to re-claim him for $35,000 in February and his first race back in those familiar hands was a solid one when not badly beaten by much better. Luni Sima’s last two outings seem to indicate he’s cycled back to peak form while he’s also one of only two members of the field with multiple wins at the distance.

Race 11

Again, confidence was not high at press time that the finale would remain on the grass. Grace Darling and Marshamarshamarsha should find ample pace to run at, and both are multiple winners on turf. They are the top choices, if the races goes as scheduled. A switch to Tapeta would likely make the much-improved My Royal Vow the No. 1 priority in this lineup.
