ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Woodbine Oaks contender Dixie Law makes her much-anticipated season debut in Saturday’s $100,000 Ruling Angel Stakes, an open seven-furlong event for 3-year-old fillies. Trained by Dale Desruisseaux for Hillsbrook Farms, Dixie Law was among the leading 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine last year, during which she won 3 of 5 starts and was a Sovereign Award finalist for divisional honors. After landing her six-furlong debut in a maiden special weight on the main turf July 12, Dixie Law missed some training, along with the Catch a Glimpse Stakes, while sick. She didn’t start again until a close sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Natalma in September. Dixie Law subsequently took the restricted Cup and Saucer Stakes against the boys on the grass Oct. 5 and then defeated open company Nov. 2 in the Grade 3 Mazarine on the Tapeta, both under Rafael Hernandez. “I thought [the Mazarine] was her best race in that she proved herself,” Desruisseaux recalled. “She didn’t get the pace setup she got in the Cup and Saucer, but with grit and determination, she found a way to win that race in impressive fashion.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Dixie Law closed her 2-year-old season with a flat fourth against a salty group of Canadian-bred males in the 1 1/8-mile Coronation Futurity on the Tapeta on Nov. 29. Dixie Law wintered in Ocala, Fla., before returning to Woodbine around March 1 and has been working weekly since early April. Desruisseaux said he had initially been pointing her to the June 6 Fury Stakes. “We weren’t going to run her here,” Desruisseaux said. “We were looking at running her in the Fury, but the first time she worked on April 4, she was a lot further advanced, fitness-wise, than we anticipated. So, instead of breezing her another three or four more times, we felt she was ready for this race.” Luster could vie for favoritism with Dixie Law. The Ontario-bred daughter of Knicks Go won her lone 2-year-old outing convincingly by 6 1/4 lengths in a seven-furlong maiden special weight over a yielding main turf in August. Luster didn’t race again until April 9, when she won a 1 1/16-mile allowance on the grass at Keeneland by five lengths with a 76 Beyer Speed Figure as a first-time Lasix user. Fraser Aebly was aboard for Luster’s debut win and will ride her again for trainer Josie Carroll, who sent her out to work three times on the Tapeta here this spring. Rounding out the field are Frosty Mojito, Gray Dee Won, Lakota Lady, and Meilani. The talented maiden Lakota Lady has made all three of her starts over six furlongs for trainer Preston Ferris. After ending up second when debuting Feb. 14 at Fair Grounds, she came up empty as the favorite in another maiden special weight on the dirt there. She finished a clear second here most recently in the Star Shoot Stakes on the Tapeta. Post time for the expanded 11-race card is 1:20 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
