Adsense skips Lilac for sprint
CALGARY, Alberta - Trainer Bruce Phelan nominated the promising 3-year-old filly Adsense to Sunday's $50,000 Lilac Stakes at Stampede Park.
But after perusing the list of 12 nominees to the one-mile Lilac, a group that includes Dancing Allstar and Littlemiss Allison, Phelan decided to run Adsense in a six-furlong optional $40,000 claimer on Friday's card.
Other trainers followed Phelan's lead. In fact, six nominees to the Lilac are among the seven-horse field for Friday's featured seventh race.
Adsense, 2 for 2 lifetime, was visually impressive in drawing off to a five-length score locally on April 25. She faces an evenly matched group that includes the entry of Chatahoochie and Lady Lev for trainer Red McKenzie.
Footprint breaks track record
A racing surface that played lightning-fast over the Victoria Day holiday weekend produced a record-setting performance from Alberta's 2007 horse of the year, Footprint, who blazed a mile last Saturday in 1:35 to capture the Teeworth Plate by 1 1/2 lengths.
The time knocked 0.80 of a second off the previous standard set by Roll on Briartic in 1989.
On Sunday, Howsitgoinghotshot ran six furlongs in 1:09.40 to tie the course record set by Classic Rock in 1981.
* Tanika captured Monday's Ken Pearson Memorial Mile by a neck over She's Italian and Debie Ginsburg, who finished in a dead heat for second.
