Adena stallion manager, killed

Glenye Cain Oakford|May 29, 2001

Charles David Johnson, stallion manager at Adena Springs South, died after being kicked by a mare in the Ocala, Fla., farm's breeding shed last Thursday. He was 38.

The mare kicked Johnson in the chest while he helped a teaser horse dismount her. According to The Ocala Star-Banner, Terry Leonard, a groom on the scene, told police that the mare lashed out with a hind leg at the dismounting teaser but struck Johnson.

Johnson was knocked unconscious and, despite receiving CPR by paramedics, never regained consciousness. He died at Nature Coast Regional Hospital in Williston, Fla.

The hospital would not release a cause of death. Results from an autopsy scheduled for Friday will be released in two to six weeks, according to the Star-Banner report.
