Adena Springs finishes as leading breeder for 10th straight year

Frank Stronach's Adena Springs finished 2012 as the leading individual breeder in North America, topping the list for the 10th consecutive year.

According to statistics released by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc., Adena Springs, which bred the winners of 386 races from 2,946 starts, finished with earnings of $11,615,141.

Brereton C. Jones, who campaigned Kentucky Oaks winner and Eclipse Award finalist Believe You Can as a homebred, finished second, winning 230 races for $7,961,894. Darley checked in third, breeding the winners of 96 races for earnings of $7,526,855.

Adena Springs, Jones, and Darley are also the three finalists for the Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder, with the award to be presented on Jan. 19. Adena is bidding for its third consecutive title, and ninth in the last 10 years.

Top runners representing the Adena breeding program on the track in 2012 included Game On Dude, who ranked 22nd nationally in earnings with $997,500 over the course of the season. The son of Adena stallion Awesome Again, raced by the partnership of Diamond Pride LLC, Lanni Family Trust, Mercedes Stable LLC, and Bernie Schiappa, won five graded stakes races last season, including two Grade 1 events, the Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap and the Awesome Again Stakes.

Hunters Bay, who raced as a homebred for Stronach Stables, earned $472,954 in 2012, winning a pair of Grade 3 events in Canada.

Adena Springs also finished atop a second breeder list that includes partnerships, breeding the winners of 428 races from 3,92 starts for earnings of $12,553,534. Jones and Darley also rounded out the top three on that list.
