Adayar, second by less than two lengths in two stakes in April and May, rallied on the rail in the final quarter-mile to record an attractive win in Saturday’s Group 1 English Derby at Epsom Racecourse, south of London. Adayar, who paid $36.80 in American pools, finished 4 1/4 lengths clear of 50-1 Mojo Star in the field of 11. Ridden by Adam Kirby for trainer Charlie Appleby, Adayar was rated as the third-string chance for Godolphin Racing. Hurricane Lane, winner of the Group 2 Dante Stakes on May 13 at York Racecourse, was Godolphin’s main contender and was the 5-1 second choice in the betting, while the stable’s One Ruler was 10-1. Hurricane Lane tracked the leaders throughout, but could not keep pace through Epsom’s uphill finish and ran third, beaten 7 3/4 lengths. Bolshoi Ballet, the 4-5 favorite, was a disappointing seventh, beaten 17 lengths. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Bolshoi Ballet was well-placed with a half-mile remaining in the race at 1 1/2 miles, but was not a factor when urged by jockey Ryan Moore. The Epsom Derby was run on good-to-soft turf after significant rain Friday. The track was watered earlier in the week and was expected to be good and good-to-firm in places. The late change in condition led to the Saturday withdrawal of Mohaafeth, an undefeated stakes winner at Newmarket last month. Adayar, a winner of 2 of 5 starts, gave Kirby his first win in the English Derby with his second mount. Kirby finished 11th aboard Dubai Thunder in 2017. Godolphin and Appleby teamed to win the 2018 English Derby with Masar. Kirby was expected to ride John Leeper in Saturday’s $1.58 million English Derby, but was replaced in the middle of the week by Frankie Dettori. John Leeper finished ninth. Adayar was 50-1 with British bookmakers early Saturday and was 16-1 with them at post time after late support. Kirby, 32, has won Group 1 races at Royal Ascot and is well known for his success on the winter all-weather circuit in Great Britain. Adayar is a colt by Frankel, who won a maiden race at Nottingham Racecourse in his second and final start last year. Earlier this year, Adayar was second by 1 1/4 lengths in the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown on April 23 and second by a half-length in the Derby Trial Stakes as the 6-5 favorite at Lingfield on May 8.
