Accretive became a stakes winner Saturday night when he battled for a three-quarter-length victory over Kapuna in the $100,000 Evangeline Downs Mile. It was another 2 3/4 lengths back in third to Frankie’s Empire. The race was one of three stakes on the card. They helped usher in opening weekend at the Opelousas, La., track. The season runs through Aug. 23. The Evangeline Mile was for 4-year-olds and up. Cool Cowboy ($4.60) was a 4 1/4-length winner of the $60,000 Lafayette for 3-year-olds and Liken It ($2.80) romped by 7 1/4 lengths in the $35,000 Kenny Cotton Memorial for Alabama-breds. Accretive ($10.80) settled off the pace set by Machine Gun Man, who took the field through an opening quarter in 23.51 seconds and an opening half-mile in 46.42 seconds. Kapuna took the lead through six furlongs in 1:11.38 and was soon confronted by Accretive. The winner went on to cover the distance on a sealed track rated “wet-fast” in 1:37.85. Timothy Thornton was aboard for trainer Joe Sharp. Accretive is a son of Practical Joke who races for Carl Moore. He has now won 4 of 19 starts for earnings of $496,438.
