Acapulco training up to Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Churchill Downs/Coady Photography Acapulco is expected to run next in either the Oct. 8 Woodford or the Oct. 14 Franklin County.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Acapulco was a surprise no-show in the entries for the Franklin County Stakes here Friday, a race that was supposed to serve as a stepping-stone to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint for the 3-year-old filly.
Trainer Wesley Ward said he still intends to make the Nov. 5 Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.
“She came out of her last work a little more tired than I wanted to see,” said Ward. “We’ll just have to go into the Breeders’ Cup without a prep.”
Acapulco, the winner of the Group 1 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot as a 2-year-old last year, is unraced since May 14, when she won an ungraded turf-sprint stakes at Churchill Downs. Her 2016 campaign was stalled by a foot abscess in June.
