The field for Aqueduct’s Friday the 13th feature may be short, but there’s no shortage of blue-blooded pedigrees in the optional claimer scheduled for 1 3/8 miles on the turf course. The field of six gets into the race through a variety of eligibility conditions – either non-winners of two other than maiden or claiming, non-winners in 2015, or for a claiming price of $62,500. The race carries a $71,000 purse. The three primary contenders look to be Margano, a full brother to ill-fated 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro; Fire Away, a half-brother to four-time graded stakes winner and $1.2 million earner Mr Speaker; and Jay Gatsby, whose siblings include graded stakes winners Ecclesiastic, Teammate, and War Front, who, coincidentally, is the sire of Fire Away. In addition, Belisarius is a full brother to Collection, whose $3 million bankroll included a win in the 2010 Hong Kong Gold Cup. Completing the eclectic sextet are Dorsett, the winner of the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury in 2013, and Umgiyo, who was bred in Australia and has posted his two victories in South Africa and Dubai. :: Bet Aqueduct with DRF Bets and get FREE access to this article and all of DRF Plus, including Aqueduct selections, video, and real-time analysis. Rain early in the week washed Wednesday’s four turf races onto the main track, and with more rain expected Thursday, the turf will be something less than firm, or the race could possibly be switched to dirt. Either scenario would favor Margano, who won in the slop and on wet-fast dirt in 2013 and won last year’s $200,000 PTHA President’s Cup on yielding turf at Parx Racing. Kendrick Carmouche, Aqueduct’s leading rider through the first week of the meet, rode Margano to victory in the President’s Cup and will be back aboard the 6-year-old gelding for the first time since then. KEY CONTENDERS Fire Away (Last 3 Beyers: 86-86-77) ◗ The Phipps Stable homebred handled the 1 3/8-mile distance last out, beating first-level rivals in a three-way photo. ◗ He retains sharp form after working a half-mile in a bullet 47 seconds on turf Sunday. Margano (Last 3 Beyers: 81-90-75) ◗ The Lael Stables homebred has had 2 of 3 starts rained off the turf since returning from a layoff in August. Jay Gatsby (Beyers: 78-85) ◗ He set the pace and finished a close second while making his U.S. debut at this level and then caught soft turf while finishing fifth in the Hill Prince Stakes two weeks later. ◗ He is bred to handle dirt, as half-siblings Teammate (Shuvee, Bonnie Miss) and War Front (Alfred G. Vanderbilt) both won graded stakes on dirt.
