Abreu putting it all together this Saratoga meet
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Jorge Abreu, in his fifth year training on his own, is putting together a strong stable and he’s enjoying a solid Saratoga meet, with 6 wins from 18 starters through the first 24 days.
“The horses are running really well,” Abreu said. “I ran a lot of horses at Belmont that weren’t supposed to run, that was the wrong spot, but I just wanted to get them ready for Saratoga.”
Liveyourbeastlife, a 3-year-old Ghostzapper colt owned by William Lawrence, ran in a tough allowance race July 2 at Belmont Park, where he finished a respectable third behind the highly regarded Creed. Liveyourbeastlife came back at Saratoga on Aug. 12 to win a first-level allowance by 2 1/4 lengths under Manny Franco, earning a career-best 85 Beyer Speed Figure.
“I expected him to run well here,” said Abreu, noting that the horse was on the lead through fast fractions in the race at Belmont. “He’s a horse that really wants to be covered up. I told Manny I don’t care what you do, you break and you cover him up. That horse fights. That horse has got some ability. He’s just not a horse that is flashy in the morning, but in the afternoon he shows up.”
Abreu has recently picked up some stock from owners Seth Klarman and Lawrence Goichman. Price Talk, Abreu’s first starter this year for Klarman, finished first in a maiden $75,000 claiming race here on opening day but was disqualified for interference. He is expected to run back Sept. 2. Abreu said that horse and Democratic Values, who ran once for Chad Brown last September, appear to be the better ones he has for Klarman.
“The other ones are useful horses, but I don’t think they’re at the same level,” Abreu said.

Two of the horses Abreu trains for Goichman could run in stakes before the meet ends. Myhartblongstodady, a four-length allowance winner here July 30, is pointing to the Yaddo Stakes for New York-bred females on Sept. 4. The 2-year-old Shawdyshawdyshawdy, a debut winner here Aug. 1, is possible for the With Anticipation Stakes here Sept. 2. He also is possible for a race at Kentucky Downs.
Summer Brew, a New York-bred daughter of Summer Front who was second in her debut, is possible for the $150,000 Seeking the Ante Stakes on Sept. 4. She also could go in a maiden race by meet’s end.
