$775K Caracaro filly leads first OBS 2-year-old session

A $775,000 filly by freshman sire Caracaro led the session as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training began on Tuesday.

OBS reported that 145 juveniles sold Tuesday in the first of four sessions for gross receipts of $19,725,000. In last year’s comparable opening session, 175 horses sold for $22,746,000.

The session’s average was $136,034 and the median was $87,000. Both were gains from the 2023 opening-session figures of $129,977 and $70,000, respectively.

Tuesday’s buyback rate was 29 percent.

The session topper is from the first crop of Grade 1-placed Caracaro, whose first starter recently ran a close second at Keeneland. The filly was purchased by Three Amigos, the buying name of Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, prominent clients of trainer Bob Baffert.

The Caracaro filly, a May foal, breezed a quarter-mile in 20 2/5 seconds for consignor Global Thoroughbreds, agent, during last week’s under-tack preview show on the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack.

The filly is out of the winning Medaglia d’Oro mare Key d’Oro. She is the dam of two winners from three starters, including stakes-placed Twirled. The multiple graded stakes winners appearing on the catalog page include Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Bar of Gold.
