$75,000 Attila’s Storm filly top Thoroughbred to sell at Ruidoso Downs New Mexico-bred sale
The Thoroughbred portion of the Ruidoso Downs New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse sale saw mild declines last Friday, and was topped by an Attila’s Storm offspring for the second consecutive year.
The session moved 81 New Mexico-bred yearlings for revenues of $661,600, down 2 percent from last year’s Thoroughbred portion, when 74 horses brought $677,800. The average sale price declined 11 percent to $8,168 from $9,159.
Fred Alexander, William Hatchett, and Bobby McQueen teamed up to buy the sale-topper, a filly by leading New Mexico sire Attila’s Storm, for $75,000.
The dark bay or brown filly is the first foal out of the winning Roman Ruler mare Nineteenninetyfour, who is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Rydilluc and stakes winner Gold Wonder. The extended family features Grade 1 winners Roman Ruler and El Corredor, Grade 3 winner Seducer’s Song, and Grade 1-placed runners Maimonides and Sociable Duck.
The filly was bred in New Mexico by Alexander, and she was consigned by Alexander’s A & A Ranch.
Attila’s Storm stands at A & A Ranch in Anthony, N.M., for an advertised fee of $4,000. He was the state’s leading sire by progeny earnings in 2016, and was represented by last year’s Ruidoso Thoroughbred sale-topper, when a colt sold to Ruis Racing for $100,000.
