Chasing Moments, a 6-year-old mare by Orb, was purchased for $70,000 at Wednesday’s California Thoroughbred Breeders Association January mixed sale in Pomona, Calif., the most expensive horse of the one-day auction. Chasing Moments, the winner of a $20,000 claiming race for maidens at Los Alamitos in her seventh and final start in June 2019, was listed in sale company records as purchased by Marcelo Aguera of Long Beach, Calif., from the consignment of Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch, agent. :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Aguera led all buyers, purchasing four broodmares, all in foal to Stay Thirsty and all from the Lovacres Ranch consignment, for $180,000. Stay Thirsty stands at Lovacres Ranch. A yearling filly by Malibu Moon was purchased for $60,000 by Double Chevron Racing from the consignment of Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Thoroughbreds, agent. The filly is a half-sister to Bellamy V, a stakes winner in Panama. Overall at Wednesday’s auction, 73 horses were listed as sold for $575,100, an average of $7,878 and a median of $3,200. There were 25 horses withdrawn and 44 recorded as not sold. In 2020, the corresponding sale had 121 horses listed as sold for $885,400. The average price was $7,317 compared to an average price of $7,275 in 2019. Wednesday’s sale was the first equine auction in Los Angeles County since the corresponding sale last year. Fasig-Tipton did not conduct a 2020 2-year-olds in-training sale after hosting such an event at Santa Anita in June 2019. Fasig-Tipton’s California yearling sale was held at Los Alamitos Racecourse in Orange County in October because of coronavirus restrictions in Los Angeles County.
