Sierra Leone, winner of the Grade 2 Risen Star in his most recent start, closed as the favorite in last weekend’s Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, followed by last year’s 2-year-old champion, Fierceness. Sierra Leone, who is being pointed to the April 6 Blue Grass Stakes for his final Derby prep, was 7-1 at the close of betting, tops among the 39 individual interests. Fierceness, who has a single start this year, closed at 9-1. Fierceness is being pointed to the Florida Derby. No major Derby prep races were held last weekend, and the future wager betting revealed that bettors are lukewarm over most of the top contestants for the Derby. That pair was followed by Dornoch (13-1) and a trio of horses at 16-1: Deterministic, Mystik Dan, and Conquest Warrior. In the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, Impel closed as the 7-1 favorite, followed by Just F Y I, at 8-1, and Tariga, at 11-1. The field of “all other 3-year-old fillies” was the 12-1 co-fourth choice, with Intricate. The Oaks pool offered last weekend is the only one for the race that will be offered this year. Betting on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool last weekend was $334,581, including win and exacta bets. Betting on the Oaks was $69,717, also including win and exacta bets, for a total of $458,269. The final Derby future wagering pool is scheduled to open on Thursday, April 4. It will close early on Saturday, April 6, before a trio of significant preps – the Wood Memorial, the Blue Grass Stakes, and the Santa Anita Derby – are held that day.
