$60K mare leads early in Barretts sale

A 6-year-old mare by Forest Camp took the early lead Monday when she sold for $60,000 at the Barretts winter mixed auction in Pomona, Calif.

Paula Capestro signed the ticket for Forest Melody early in the opening session. Special T Thoroughbreds, agent, consigned the stakes-placed mare. Capestro trained the mare and also co-owned her with R. Man Racing Stables.

Forest Melody last raced in March 2009, when she finished sixth in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Handicap. She was not cataloged in foal to the Barretts sale.

Forest Melody, a daughter of the Seattle Song mare As We sing, has earned $215,451 and has won three of 23 starts.

The Barretts winter mixed auction was to continue through Tuesday at Fairplex in Pomona. The 539-horse catalog features a major reduction of horses owned by the Craig family. Sessions start daily at 11 a.m.
