$550,000 Nyquist colt tops third day at OBS spring sale
After a buoyant Wednesday session at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training, things came back down to earth Thursday, with a $550,000 Nyquist colt leading the penultimate day of the sale.
OBS reported 147 juveniles sold on Thursday for gross receipts of $15,122,000. In last year’s comparable third session, 167 sold for $20,856,000.
The first two sessions of this sale posted year-to-year, session-to-session gains in average and median – including a 19 percent jump in average and 25 percent spike in median during Wednesday’s session, led by a $1.9 million Tiz the Law filly who leads the sale overall through three of four days. Thursday’s session was the first to post a category decline, as the average was $102,871, dipping 18 percent from $124,866 last year. The median, however, held strong, finishing at $65,000, up 8 percent from $60,000.
The buyback rate was 22 percent.
The session-topping Nyquist colt was purchased by bloodstock agent Donato Lanni, on behalf of Amr Zedan’s Zedan Racing Stable. The colt, who was consigned by Wavertree Stable, as agent, breezed a furlong in 10 seconds flat during last week’s under-tack preview show on the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack.

The colt is out of millionaire Acoma, winner of the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes and six other graded stakes. The Empire Maker mare is the dam of three winners from five starters.
Acoma’s female line traces directly to influential blue hen Courtly Dee. In this colt’s immediate family, champions Althea, Covfefe, Festival of Light, and Yamanin Paradise appear on the catalog page, as does Grade 1 winner and notable sire Arch.
