$375,000 Shackleford filly tops Day 1 at OBS July sale
A filly by Shackleford sold for $375,000 to lead Tuesday's activity at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.'s July sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age, as the opening session posted a gain in average but declines in other economic indicators.
OBS reported 147 horses sold in the first of three sessions for gross receipts of $4,788,800, compared with 204 selling for $6,119,500 in last year’s first session. The 2019 auction was held on its traditional dates in June; this year's renewal, the finale of the juvenile sale season in North America, was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The average was $32,577, up 9 percent from $29,998 a year ago. However, the median price was $13,000, down 26 percent compared to $17,500 in 2019. The buyback rate was up to 33 percent after finishing at 22 percent in the comparable session last year.
Bloodstock agent Donato Lanni purchased the session-leading Shackleford filly from the consignment of Jesse Hoppel's Coastal Equine LLC, as agent. The New York-bred filly, who is named Shack's Lil Mishap, had breezed a quarter-mile in 20 4/5 seconds on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface during last week's under-tack preview show.
The filly is out of the Indian Charlie mare Peace Queen, a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Tizaqueena and to Group 2-placed New Trails. Graded stakes winners Lookin For Eight, Miss Mo Mentum, Summersault, and Ziggy's Act appear on the catalog page, as do Mexican Horse of the Year King Famous and Saudi Arabian champion Bow Beaver.
